Yes, it is the perfect cold weather comfort meal, but also grilled cheeses and bowls of soup were the safest bets at roadside diners and cafes back in my road-tripping 20s. Middle of Mississippi? St. Louis? New England? The dessert between California and Texas? Grilled cheese and tomato soup was the constant. A lifetime ago, in both years and tastes, the meal is a solid dose of nostalgia.
