Growing up, this was the only cookbook that existed in the house. My mom already knew how to make all the classic Yucatecan dishes that it held (her mama took care of that, not a cookbook), so it was mostly a reference point for when she was trying to pull off something outside of the daily repertoire. Its poor condition is mostly due to careless storage. It lived in the extra stuff drawer among the random bits and pieces that didn’t have a home for over 25 years. I just unearthed it from the top shelf of my kitchen and it may be just the push that I need to finally veganize a lot of the southern Mexican food that I grew up eating. I’ve been doing it casually for a while now, but things may have to get serious.
