The following is a list of what food items the 12yo has requested to have available for her birthday weekend: Oatmeal pancakes Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon Tres leches cake Juice (any kind) Casa Garcia nachos Lots has changed in the past year (height, maturity, etc.) but the only change in this list is (1) type of cake and (2) a preference for a plate of nachos instead of mac and cheese. Baby steps, y’all. P.S. Post where […]

About to kick off my birthday weekend in a few hours. It’s a big one – 40. No insightful reflections so far, but off to enjoy the sun and embrace my awesome family. Forty with them at my side is way better. Eating a bowl of sesame soba noodles.  Sitting in the sun. Listening to The New Latinaires.

Geez. How did we get here? An eleven-year-old that fits in my shoes and no longer likes wearing bright colors is not something that you plan for… it kinda just sneaks up on you. I probably feel this way every year, but this age is the best. She is eager to “get bigger” but not quite ready to let go of the toys in her room or the stuffed animals on her bed. Her confidence […]

week one wrapped | aneelee.wordpress.com

We will march happily into the weekend with both the first week of school and a HUGE milestone for the girl under her belt. I am feeling really grounded after dipping my toes in a solid dose of routine this week as well. Lunches were packed. Cakes were made . Meal plans were executed and I even managed a quick recipe post for that vegetable that everyone hates. All without going batty and sleepless! 😉 My mom […]

birthday had | aneelee.wordpress.com

I turned 38 this past weekend and had a super quiet day with my two most important people to ease the soul and brain. Made this cake. Lounged in bed with a book. Watched some football. Ate at Elizabeth Street for the first time. Lounged in bed some more. Perfection.

This will go down as the birthday that she baked her own cakes – vegan chocolate cakes to be exact. They were moist and dense without being bricks or too sweet. Hoping that this is the beginning of a new birthday tradition and looking forward to baking many, many more cakes with her. Happy Birthday, not-so-little one. I hope that you ease through year nine as gracefully as you did year eight. * Cake recipe […]

birthday – take two with pie

A birthday celebration around here doesn’t feel quite right without at least one home-cooked meal. I’m pretty sure that’s why his birthday felt so rushed and incomplete a few days ago. Luckily, we were able to turn work off for the weekend and have a handful of quiet days at home to celebrate. The slower pace of the weekend also meant that our daughter was able to help make the birthday pie. Saturday Breakfast/Lunch – […]

There was supposed to be this long and involved post about how my sister visited and how we are now trying our best to avoid the SXSW craze whilst enjoying the little bits of movies and music that we do like, but really, what I am most excited about is that I made my first chocolatey-gooey birthday cake with chocolatey-gooey frosting. I. Made. Cake. It wasn’t perfect. It was far from, but it was moist […]

I’m not usually “allowed” to cook on my birthday and although most would be psyched to have a day’s break, I have to admit, that it would be nice to dive in there right now and try out my new gift with a batch of homemade tortillas. Granola? Muffins? It all sounds sooooo yummy, but I promised. This may be the last year I observe this no-cooking-on-your-birthday rule. Be patient. Be kind. Eat cake!
