getting ahead of your CSA pickup

food-related / vegetarian meal plans

I’ve always been a big advocate of planning from what you have on hand instead of planning and THEN shopping. Admittedly, making this switch is a tough one. You have to build new shopping habits and learn to build a pantry that will support your vegetable stash. Luckily, most of our local CSAs here in Austin do a really good job of letting you know what to expect. It’s not foolproof. You might end up […]

grocery shopping with instacart

food-related

The following post was put together with the support of Whole Foods. Cooking an average of 15-20 meals a week depletes the cupboards pretty darned fast, so grocery-shopping is a non-negotiable part of my (and every home cook’s) life. My bi-weekly CSA share, farmers’ market shopping, and food swapping has shortened my grocery store lists significantly, but I still rely on brick and mortar grocery stores for staples (non-dairy milks, tofu, bulk legumes/grains, etc.). I’ve […]

If I learned anything this summer it is these two things – (1) bread-baking is a no-no in the Texas heat and (2) okra is not my friend. Nevertheless, it has made its way into my CSA box this week. Any takers? I think I’ve given up. Rest of the box’s contents below: Arugula (I love it when people call them roquettes, sounds more fun) Bok Choy Fall Tomatoes Butternut Squash Zucchini Yellow Squash Sweet […]

We still have peppers and zucchini and tomatoes, but today we got green stuff in the box arugula, bok choi and chard! The bok choi went into today’s quickie meal of stir fry and the chard is headed straight for a tortilla with some potatoes and homemade salsa. Complete stock of the box: Chard Bok Choi Arugula (!) Basil One Little Zucchini Red Onions White Onions Okra Sweet Potatoes Acorn Squash Eggplants Tomatoes Green Onions […]

It has been nearly a week since I picked up my CSA stash and I apologize for not having posted. We have lots of fun that we’re trying to squeeze in before school starts and birthday festivities in the works that have been eating up every second of my free time. The summer heat has finally taken a toll on Texas gardens and crops and our CSA box is showing it – no more tomatoes […]

First and foremost, accept my apologies. We have been enjoying the oodles of summer veggies and I’ve been cooking sooooo much that I’ve rarely had energy left to write things down. The life that pulses around our kitchen seems to have steadied and so I finally feel like I can take a sec to THINK about what comes next. We only have other 5 dinners to cook before our next CSA pick-up, but with the […]

Today was the first day of our CSA pick-ups at Wheatsville, which is my most favorite grocery store in the whole wide world. It was an absolutely perfect experience! I took a peek at the CSA box to do a quick mental plan on my way in, went about getting the things on my list and then picked up my box of JBG produce on my way to the car. We are, decidedly, eating in […]

I messed up about a month ago and forgot to renew our CSA membership. Doh! It has been a month since our last pick-up and about three weeks without Johnson’s Backyard Garden produce in our house. It had been sorely missed. This week’s offerings: carrots, oranges, grapefruits, avocado, kohlrabi, lettuce, spinach, green garlic, parsley, bok choi, big ol’ bag of broccoli and collards. I think that’s it. Also, we’ve switched to Friday pick-ups. I’m hoping that the extra […]
