getting her back in the kitchen 1 | aneelee.wordpress.com

We are embracing the extra week of summer that we finally find ourselves with. She’s been wanting to tackle more challenging dishes in the kitchen than her “kid” cookbooks offer and we’ve been on the hunt all summer. Nothing has really surfaced that takes into consideration the limitations of 10yo body in a full-sized kitchen without resorting to the notorious “bagel pizzas.” Sigh. We are going to plot our own course in this new venture. […]

Making lemonade reminds me of summers in Mexico with my grandfather. He would send us out into the garden behind the kitchen to fetch as many key limes as we could find. We’d tumble into the kitchen with them scooped in our skirts and drop them onto the table. We’d then sit for what seemed like hours, watching him carefully cut the limes, then squeeze them and finally add the sugar and water. At the […]

Our daughter has been quite the cook the past few weeks. She’s been baking, taking on dinner, lunch and has in the past couple of weeks hit what I think is a gigantic milestone – cooking at the stove. I want to say that she’s cooked more dinners than I have in the past few days! She made Vegetarian Stir-Fried Rice from Honest Pretzels* a couple of days ago and it was quite yummy. A […]

celebrating / cooking with kids

The day’s almuerzo was a meal of our choice when we were growing up and, perhaps, that is why special occasions have always brought up images of yummy home-cooked favorites. My mom would whip together arroz con pollo when we were younger and, as our taste buds matured, she would spend her day cooking the more labor intensive stews that I still crave and try to replicate. Awesome memories of family and food. Lots of […]

I stumbled across this snapshot of last summer’s watermelon and it struck me how utterly worn out and ready I am for this break.  This school year has been wonderful for the 6-year-old, but it has us ALL worn out and beat down. She’s already got a short list of things that she wants to make in the kitchen – popsicles, banana bread and a mango lassi. There’s also some talk of a lemonade stand […]

cooking together – making tortillas

We really need to do this more often. We both love to cook and sometimes it’s really hard to let go of the control in the kitchen – for her and me both. My recipes are mine. Her recipes are hers and the middle ground gets awfully contentious when you put the two of us in our tight kitchen together. I’m not sure why it hadn’t occurred to me to have her do this before. […]
