The 11yo starts middle school on Friday, so we are officially in reset mode. That means practicing portion control for packed lunches, getting up and being dressed (and fed) by 8am, and having a dinner plan in place for *most* nights. This is no small task if you take into consideration how slammed we have been with work and how much I have relied on eating out the past couple of weeks. Today was a […]

The sick has got the energy in the house on mute. Naps, audiobooks, podcasts, music, and a fair share of video streaming are going in everyone’s respective corners. We seem to have survived the weekend, but there is much to catch up on and I suspect the 11yo has at least a couple of more days of watch she disparagingly refers to as “sick activities” before she can get back to normal. Good news is […]

The temperature is plummeting as I type this post and we are just a *wee bit* miffed about it. 30º may not seem like a big deal in February too most, but this is Central Texas and it was in the 70s just a couple of days ago. Stomps feet. Will be warming the house with lots of soups and baking this week: Meals Potato Soup with Pesto* | Mixed Greens with Grapefruit Vinaigrette Ginger […]

We are officially swimming in figs. Needless to say that this week’s meal plan will feature lots of ’em. I ran out of space in the fridge on Wednesday last week so I only have 4 meals planned. Getting our cooking/leftover rhythm figured out is top of mind this week as is stocking the freezer with cold treats and some quick dinners. Breakfast Brown-sugar Roasted Fig Oatmeal Yogurt, Coconut Granola & Fresh Figs Zucchini Bread […]

cooking from The Heart of the Plate | aneelee.wordpress.com

Hello, everyone and hello to 2014! I am excited to crank back into productivity mode after several weeks of downtime and although I am not one to usually fall into the New Year’s resolution trap, the past few weeks have provided the perfect mental space that I have needed to figure out what I may want to do with this little space. Meal plans are, by far, my most steady contribution, so they will definitely […]

We are running dangerously low on vegetables in the house. We have hot peppers. We have potatoes. We might have half of a small red onion left and a butternut squash. CSA pickup is not until Wednesday and that small stash is going to have be stretched into 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners and snacks. These are the kinda weeks when I am most grateful for my homemade pantry. Breakfast Skillet Potatoes & Poached […]

Strangely enough, it is on the quiet weeks that I find my cooking discipline wavering. I seem to want to cozy into the free hours that the calendar holds with a book and some tea and maybe a stash of yarn. So… this week is going to need a little more structure if there is to be home-cooked food around. Meals Split Pea Soup | Quinoa Cakes Chard and Goat Cheese Enchiladas | Frijoles Negros […]
